Congo military recruits' fate 'unknown'
Brazzaville - The Congolese military says the fate of dozens of military recruits is still unknown after their dormitory collapsed following an explosion inside the military munitions depot in the Congolese capital.
The new military recruits were assigned to a dormitory that witnesses say pancaked following deadly explosions which occurred on Sunday after a fire spread to the arms depot. The recruits are among many whose bodies cannot yet be collected due to the danger of further explosions.
Spokesperson Colonel Jean Robert Obargui told The Associated Press by telephone on Wednesday that the army "is awaiting the death toll". He said, "It's for sure that some of them died".
Red Cross spokesperson Delphin Kibakidi told the AP that rescuers have not yet been allowed inside a several kilometre long stretch of the capital due to the threat.
