Congolese warlord gets 14 years

2012-07-10 10:58

The Hague - The International Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga to 14 years in jail for using child soldiers in his rebel army, in the tribunal's first such order.

"Taking into account all the factors... the court sentences Mr Lubanga to 14 years in prison," presiding Judge Adrian Fulford told The Hague-based court.

He said the court has taken into account the time Lubanga has already spent behind bars since March 2006, meaning he will effectively spend eight years in prison.

Lubanga, 51, was convicted in March of war crimes, specifically for using child soldiers in his rebel army in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2002-03, in the ICC's first verdict since it was set up a decade ago.

He was found guilty of abducting children as young as 11 and forcing them to fight and commit atrocities in the DRC's northeastern gold-rich Ituri region. During the trial prosecutors told how young girls served as sex-slaves, while boys were trained to fight.

Fulford, however, said that prosecutors had failed to prove the sexual allegations beyond reasonable doubt.

Former ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo last month called for a 30-year sentence against Lubanga, saying his crimes were "of the most serious concern for the international community".

Lubanga, who has been detained in The Hague since 2006, is the founder of the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC) and commander of its military wing the Patriotic Forces for the Liberation of Congo (FPLC). His trial started in 2009.

He had pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

      because they behave like ...well...africans.

      nosiphom.mazibuko - 2012-07-10 12:22

I did not think Ratko Malodic was an Africna, maybe I am misinformed - nor did I think Radovan Karadzic or Slobodan Milosevic for that matter. Some of you imbeciles are so racist that you can bend the truth. Well Milosevic died before he could be convicted, maybe the Africans just live a bit too long??? some of you guys must read before commenting!!

      The.OT.Oracle - 2012-07-10 12:57

The ICC has only convicted one person thus far... (the other indictees are regarded as innocent until proven guilty)... That being said, shouldn't you be asking why Africans are committing such heinous crimes instead? Or are you going to pretend like Lubanga did not head a rebel movement known for using child soldiers?

      jacques.otto.50 - 2012-07-10 19:33

sorry Langa. Damn this guy is black lets rather release him and send him back to Congo to kill and rape some more. Is that fair response.

  • issah.zuze - 2012-07-10 11:44

ICC, every time why concern Africas?...

      nosiphom.mazibuko - 2012-07-10 12:24

And Mladic, Milosevic, Karadzic all Africans to you, imbecile??

      jacques.otto.50 - 2012-07-10 19:35

well Issah who else should do it. Should he just run around killing more people. What does it matter if it is Africa or not. This is a thug man or do you see him as a leader or upstanding person

  • langa.kumalo - 2012-07-10 11:46

It is not only africans who are war criminals. What about that G>W Bush guy how many iraqs he has killed? What about the SYrian president? What about the Israel troops killing innocent people in GAZA the list goes on

      susanna.smit.7 - 2012-07-10 12:01

It is about the children's lives he ruined and 14 years of which only 8 will be spent in some luxury prison is not what I call justice. Are you not infuriated that these children are all African children?

      jacques.otto.50 - 2012-07-10 19:48

Firstly Langa George Bush is a chop i agree but their was war inacted on their country so they reacted. He did not send children or ubduct their duaghters to become prostetutes. Nor did he take their sons and hand them a gun. The Syrian president will get his day. As to Isreal come on man its coming from both sides. If they are found directing a missile on purpose to kill children then it is different. As previously said Langa lets do this as you would approve. Lets send all the non Africans to be sentanced in the ICC and let the warlords in Africa just murder and rape. Will you be happy then. Or wait rather lets tell the international community just to leave Africa alone. No not good enough hey Langa because then the International community is wrong again. One cant please you hey Langa. Think about it no matter what the world offers or does not offer you will blame and be upset with the world rather than with Africa

      jacques.otto.50 - 2012-07-10 19:57

No Susan Langa is blinded by the size of that chip on his shoulder. He had to think long and hard to to find a white guys Name so he used Goerge Bush. Then he could not blame a Isreali poletitian so he just states Isreal as if the whole country is killing children in Palestine. Then he Jumped to Syria leaving Robert Mugabe completely out of the equation. Hey Langa you know the war in Iraq is still going on hey why not mention Barack Obama....o yes because that chip blinds your racism and put it before the welfare of Africa. Langa this is what you would do. A African man stands in the street Next to a white man and an African Child. The African man shoots the child dead and you run after the white guy prosecute him because the bullet did not him instead. Is that a fair summery of your thinking

I think that even european, asian n american companies that sponsored these warlords should be brought to book. These companies make millions from the deaths of millions of innocent people. I believe that George Bush and his entire cabinet that authorized the invasion of both iraq n Afghanistan should be charged. As their reasons for invading these countries were unfounded. These wars resulted in the deaths of millions of innocent citizens of these countries.

      jason.sole.92 - 2012-07-10 19:23

      completely agree
