DA: Remove bogus Aids cure
2005-03-17 13:28
Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance on Thursday called on the Medicine Control Council (MCC) to take action against a company claiming to "cure Aids".
Ryan Coetzee of the departmnet of health said: "The MCC has a statutory obligation to protect the public from medical scams.
"By not taking action against the Matthias Rath Foundation's claims to cure Aids, it is failing in this responsibility."
He said the DA would write to the MCC requesting them to remove Rath's products.
The Rath foundation had allegedly placed several adverts in newspapers recently stating that its multivitamin concoctions were able to stop the progress of Aids.
Coetzee said any scientific evidence did not back these claims.
He said: "In fact, the Advertising Standards Authority found that the foundation had fabricated or distorted the conclusions of legitimate studies to provide "proof" of its cures."
