DRC military hunts evasive ex-warlord

2012-05-16 10:49

Kinshasa - A notorious ex-warlord who became a general in the Congolese army despite international war crimes charges is now being blamed for fomenting more unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s east and faces new charges of crimes against humanity.

And as Bosco Ntaganda's loyalists started to split off from the military last month to form a new rebel group in the wilds of eastern DRC, the man blamed for orchestrating the defection has gone into hiding.

Ensuing violence from the defections has also force thousands to flee their homes in eastern Congo.

Now the Congolese government has vowed to arrest Ntaganda and the International Criminal Court announced on Monday it is expanding the charges against him. The ICC believes all of this would have been avoided had Ntaganda been detained years ago.
