Cape Town - A successful election in the Democratic Republic of Congo on July 30 will greatly assist the struggle against poverty and underdevelopment in the whole of Africa, said Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma on Monday.
"How inspiring and fulfilling it is to all people in the continent and international community that we are at the dawn of the day when history will have its say in the DRC," Dlamini-Zuma told MPs in the National Assembly during a debate on her budget vote.
Africa, the United Nations and the world were supporting the Congo as it prepared for its first democratic election in over four decades, she said.
"A successful election in the DRC will unleash a vast amount of human energy in the struggle against poverty and underdevelopment in the Congo and in the rest of the continent," said Dlamini-Zuma.
"Peace and stability in the Congo will consolidate peace and stability in the great lakes region.
"To assist the Congolese people to meet the challenge of development, we shall invest more effort in the bi-national commission for the reconstruction of the Congo."
