DRC warlord returns - 25 dead

2012-01-25 19:10

Kinshasa - A Congolese rights group says at least 19 children and six pregnant women died from acute malnutrition and lack of medicine after a feared warlord returned to the southeast.

Another 1 000 children examined by the African Association for the Defence of Human Rights between January 13 and  16 in Katanga province are showing signs of malnutrition.

Field officer Jean-Claude Baka said on Wednesday that people are living in temporary shelters without access to food or medicine after fleeing when Kyungu Mutanga returned.

Mutanga was sentenced to death in 2009 by a military tribunal in the regional capital of Lubumbashi for crimes against humanity. He broke out of jail in September.

The province's interior minister Dikanga Kazadi called it "a humanitarian catastrophe".
