Disrupting schools 'illegal'

Johannesburg - Gauteng's SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) warned its members on Tuesday that disrupting schools is illegal, after they disturbed classes in Roodepoort and Soweto on Monday.

Spokesperson Tseliso Ledimo said: "This action is illegal. We are in a process of meeting with provincial leaders by the end of the week to discuss the matter."

Sadtu members apparently disrupted classes in Soweto and Florida in a bid to have appointment letters signed for their preferred school principals.

The union's regional spokesperson Ronald Nyathi was quoted in the Sowetan on Tuesday as saying: "We will deploy members to ensure that no school is operating until the appointment letters have been signed".

Ledimo admitted that Nyathi's utterances indicated disruptions would continue, but he said no reports of disruptions were recorded by mid-morning on Tuesday.

He also called on Sadtu members to refrain from participating in the action that saw some Soweto and Roodepoort schools disrupted on Monday.

Some 12 Gauteng department of education's district offices were also affected.
