Pretoria - Newly-elected African Union Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma met several former African heads of state and government in Waterkloof, east of Pretoria, on Wednesday.

Convoys carrying former presidents including Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique, Bakili Muluzi of Malawi, John Kufuor of Ghana and Karl Auguste Offman of Mauritius arrived at the diplomatic guesthouse on Wednesday morning.

The meeting is part of a series of consultations Dlamini-Zuma has embarked on before she assumes her official duties as head of the AU Commission at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, later this year.

Home Affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said Dlamini-Zuma would remain responsible for the department until all the requirements and processes related to her assumption of the AU position were completed.

Dlamini-Zuma was elected in July as the first female head of the AU Commission, in what analysts described as a watershed moment for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

She beat incumbent Jean Ping of Gabon in a closely fought election over several rounds of voting.

She is the first person from the SADC region to head the continental organisation.
