Cape Town - Botswanan president Festus Mogae should commute the sentences of all prisoners in his country who were awaiting execution, South Africa's National Association of Democratic Lawyers said on Friday.
In a statement condemning the weekend execution of convicted killer Mariette Bosch, Nadel said all progressive South Africans should reaffirm a commitment to the fundamental principle of the right to life.
Violence, murder, rape, women and child abuse, and acts of urban
terror were contributing to a climate of resistance to South
Africa's fledgling human rights culture.
Calls for the return of the death penalty even by some enlightened members of society were misplaced, misguided and grounded in anger and fear, and would not solve the ills of the country. - Sapa
