Dozens die in Somali fighting

2012-03-10 19:28
Mogadishu - Witnesses say at least 23 people were killed when Somali insurgents attacked Ethiopian troops near the two countries' joint border.

Residents in Yurkud village say Saturday's battle lasted several hours.

Mohamed Hussein says he saw at least 17 dead fighters from the al-Qaeda linked al-Shabab insurgency.

Resident Ali Barre says he saw six Ethiopian soldiers in uniform who had been killed and were being carried past his house.

Al-Shabab claimed to have killed scores of soldiers. The militants frequently exaggerate their victories.

Ethiopian troops moved into the border regions of Somalia earlier this year as part of a three-pronged attack on the insurgency.

Somalia has been wracked by civil war for 21 years.
