El-Arish - Egyptian officials say that a drive-by shooting in the restive Sinai Peninsula has killed two policemen.

Security and medical officials say suspected Islamic militants opened fire on a group of policemen in the city of El-Arish late on Friday, killing the two and wounding a third.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to speak to the media. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Egypt has been battling an Islamic insurgency in northern Sinai for years, but attacks against the army and police dramatically increased after the July 2013 ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

The Islamic State affiliate based in Sinai has claimed a series of large-scale assaults there.
