Duo held for human trafficking
Johannesburg - A West Rand couple has been arrested on charges of abduction, human trafficking and extortion after allegedly kidnapping a Zimbabwean woman, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.
Superintendent Sefako Xaba said a 38-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were arrested at a house in Rail Street, Florida on Johannesburg's West Rand on Monday afternoon.
"This comes after a complainant opened a case of abduction earlier in the day. It is alleged that the couple abducted a 19-year-old female who was brought to South Africa from Zimbabwe about a week ago under the pretext that she was going to be employed," said Xaba.
The couple then demanded R1800 ransom money from the woman's brother.
"An arrangement was made with the suspects to meet at a nearby shopping centre where a ransom was to be paid," said Xaba.
But the police pounced on the couple and arrested them.
"Upon the arrest a couple then took police to their place of residence where the victim along with two other Zimbabwean nationals were released.
"Both suspects were arrested on the spot and detained at Florida Saps, charged with abduction, human trafficking and extortion," said Xaba.
The couple was expected to appear in the Roodepoort Regional Court on Wednesday.
