EU stops aid for Togo

Lome - The European Union has ended a financial aid programme aimed at facilitating political dialogue in the west African state of Togo, considering that no dialogue is taking place and that the democratic process is blocked, a source close to the EU said on Friday in the capital Lome.
"The year just ended has been, like the two preceding ones,
disappointing for the EU as regards its work on Togo's political
process," said the source, close to the EU delegation in Lome.
He said any resumption of the aid would be dependent on Togo, a former French colony, organising free and fair elections.
The process, set in motion in July 1999, has mainly been blocked by the failure of the government and the opposition to agree on organising parliamentary elections. - Sapa-AFP
