Cairo - The Egyptian Navy arrested three divers it said were trying to cut a major internet cable, five days after the country suffered a major loss of connectivity because of damage to two other underwater cables.

"The navy today succeeded in foiling an attempt by three divers to cut the underwater internet communications cable of Egypt Telecom near Shatbi beach in Alexandria," the official Facebook page of the spokesman for the armed forces said.

Three divers left the scene of Wednesday's incident in a fishing boat and sailors pursued, arrested and handed them over to border guards, said the spokesperson, who also published photographs of the three suspects.

The navy said it went to the scene 750m from shore after being notified by Egypt Telecom.

Egypt has suffered drastically reduced internet connection speeds since two major underwater cables were damaged on Friday.

The independent daily Al-Shorouk reported early on Thursday that another cable was severed near Alexandria on Wednesday morning.
