Cairo - Egypt's foreign minister is hosting envoys from Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran in a new push by regional heavyweights to help find a resolution to Syria's civil war.

Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr says the quartet is to meet over the next few days but gave no details.

His remarks came after his meeting Monday with the new UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, who is visiting Egypt before heading to Damascus. Brahimi succeeded former UN chief Kofi Anan on 1 September.

The quartet was initiated by Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi during a summit of Non-aligned nations in Tehran last month.

Morsi proposed the four-nation contact group to spearhead a new peace initiative to end the Syrian conflict, which has so far killed at least 23 000 people, according to activists.
