Egypt arrests 100 Eritreans

Cairo - Egyptian security forces have arrested 100 Eritrean migrants near a southern coastal resort who said they were heading to Israel in search of work, says a security official.

The Eritreans were detained on Monday south of the Red Sea resort of Hurghada, about half way between Cairo and Egypt's border with Sudan. In March, Egyptian security forces arrested 70 Eritrean migrants in the same area.

In recent months Egypt had arrested dozens of illegal immigrants, mostly Africans, trying to sneak into Israel from the Sinai in search of work. Several had been killed while trying to cross the frontier.

Egyptian police on Wednesday shot and seriously wounded a Sudanese and a Ghanean man who refused to obey orders to stop as they tried to cross the border. Last on Thursday, police shot dead an Eritrean man in the same area.

The 250km Egyptian-Israeli border had become a major transit route for migrants and asylum-seekers.

Fidel says... Zimbabweans are pretty much getting on with their lives with or without the support of the EU. There is nothing that the EU can do, the Zimbabwean land has been transferred permanently to Zimbabweans. Yet in the past 18 months, there has been a tentative recovery, particularly in tobacco, as black farmers have begun to grow a cash crop that was once the preserve of white commercial farmers. Tobacco production collapsed to a low of 48.8m kg in 2008, down from almost five times that in 2000. At the start of 2009 it began to recover and production more than doubled to 123m kg in 2010. This year, it is forecast to be about 131m kg. http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/8dbf7bb6-cdad-11e0-bb4f-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1aZVbdUFv Read the article...
