Cairo - Egypt's defence minister has ordered military transport buses to deploy for use by the public in Cairo's twin city to alleviate the effect of rising fares following a steep hike in fuel prices.

The Monday decision by General Sedki Sobhi was posted on the Facebook page of the Armed Forces official spokesperson. It said buses will transport the public from 06:00 to 18:00 in Giza, which has some of the area's poorest neighbourhoods.

The decision didn't say how long the buses will run for, or whether there will be a nominal fee.

This weekend's steep fuel price hikes - as much as 80% - shocked commuters and drivers. President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who has repeatedly urged Egyptians to make sacrifices, said the partial lifting of subsidies was unavoidable.
