Egyptian soccer riots: 73 dead, 1 000 hurt

2012-02-01 22:18

Cairo - Egyptian state TV has raised the death toll to 73 after fans of rival soccer teams rushed the field, hurling stones and sticks at each other and sparking a stampede.

State TV cited the health ministry and says 1 000 other people were injured in Wednesday's melee.

A medical official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorised to release the information, says some of the dead were security officers.

Egypt's state prosecutor has ordered an immediate investigation into the causes of the deaths.

Witnesses say most appeared to have occurred in a stampede after fans of the home team, Al-Masry, stormed on to the field following a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly, Egypt's top team.

They then chased players and fans from the rival team.

      Anthony - 2012-02-02 03:54

The transition from 40 years of tyranny to a demoncratic country, with law and order, is a long road. But you will hardly find an Egyptian, who wants to reverse it!!!!

Rival factions, the military must give up rule, BUT ASSIST in a transition to a democratically elected government. Nothing else would work!

I thought all the games have been suspended due to Afcon break. I remember in SA teams are playing their friendlies behind closed doors as instructed by Caf.

This happens at football games all over the world & other events that have low class uneducated hooligans attending. The incident at our local University where a mother was killed, springs to mind. Uneducated hooligans, at a gathering, are bound to have incidents of chaos.

  • malcolm - 2012-02-02 06:57

Jabu, we had a similar incident in South Africa at a football game, and the dead were being lined up on the field somewhere near the goal posts as I recall. About 20 dead if I recall correctly. It was about 15 years ago I think.

  • Christon Thoresson - 2012-02-02 09:33

it was in 2001, between orlando pirates and kaizer chiefs 43 people were killed in the stampede. its disgusting more spectators have died watching soccer than any other sport it is barbaric!

  • Ron - 2012-02-02 09:55

game for gentlemen, played by hooligans & watched by idiots

  • Anakin - 2012-02-02 11:10

So much for the present so-called "civilization" in Egypt. Barbarians now rule the land where the pyramids of Giza stand. Egytians inherited the ancient wisdoms and are now trampling everything in their wake like locusts, all for a stupid soccer game.
