Europe not doing enough for Africa - UK

Nairobi - A British official says European countries are not doing enough to help some 10 million people who need aid because of a devastating drought in the Horn of Africa.

International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell urged other nations to contribute more during Saturday's announcement that the British government will give $85m to drought relief.

He did not mention the Somali government. A report by a Somali government official says Arab donors gave tens of millions of dollars in cash over the past two years. The funds are unaccounted for.

Donors will work through established charities and not the Somali government.

Tony Lake, the head of the UN Children's Fund, says the situation will worsen because there is no harvest to bring in.
