Cairo - An Egyptian court on Wednesday sentenced former prime minister Ahmed Nazif to five years in prison in a retrial on corruption charges, state-run newspaper al-Ahram reported online.

The Cairo Criminal Court also ordered Nazif to pay a fine of 53.6 million Egyptian pounds (around $6.84m) and return 48.3 million pounds ($6.1m), according to the report.

The case is related to charges that Nazif made illegal gains when he served as prime minister from 2004 until 2011.

He was sacked during a 2011 uprising that eventually forced long serving president Hosni Mubarak to step down.

In 2012, another court sentenced Nazif to three years in prison in the same case.

A year later, the Court of Cassation, Egypt's highest appeals court, revoked the verdict and ordered a retrial for him.

Wednesday's ruling can be appealed.

Should the appeal be accepted, a second and final retrial would be held. If the appeal is rejected, the ruling would be irreversible.
