Antananarivo - A former president of Madagascar who plunged the Indian Ocean island into chaos after he staged a coup in 2009 on Thursday rejected the newly appointed prime minister, a military man, alleging procedural irregularities.

"We do not accept the appointment of the prime minister," said Andry Rajoelina, claiming the naming of the new premier Air Commodore Jean Ravelonarivo, flouted the constitution.

Ravelonarivo was named premier on Wednesday by the democratically elected President Hery Rajaonarimampianina.

He succeeded Roger Kolo, who resigned on Monday along with his cabinet following heavy criticism for their response to repeated electricity failures.

Two people have died in recent weeks when angry Madagascans took to the streets to protest rolling power blackouts.

Even with just 15% of Madagascar on the grid, the electricity company Jirama has been struggling to pay oil suppliers on time, resulting in recurrent cuts.
