Maputo - The labour ministry and labour unions in Mozambique will collect a day's wage to be distributed to victims of recent floods in the northern and central provinces of the country.
This was revealed at a news conference on Tuesday attended by the labour minister Helena Taipo and several leaders of trade unions.
Taipo said the initiative, which would be called "Mozambique for Mozambique", could be augmented by the solidarity of employers to minimise the effects of the calamities.
The money would be sent to the victims through the office of the first lady, Maria da Luz Guebuza.
More than 40 people were killed in one of the country's worst flooding and a further 84 000 were displaced in the northern and central provinces since January, this year.
The situation was further worsened last week when Cyclone Favio destroyed thousands of homes in the southern and central provinces and resulted in the displacement of thousands of people and the death of more than 10 people.
