Four Islamists killed on Mali border

Algiers - Four armed Islamists and a soldier were killed in clashes between an al-Qaeda linked group and Algerian forces on the Algerian-Malian border, local media reported on Tuesday.

The fighting broke out close to Tinzaouatin, more than 2 300km to the south of Algiers, when border guards intercepted two vehicles carrying the Islamists, said Algerian newspaper Echorouk.

According to another newspaper Ennahar, the Islamists were members of the Saharan branch of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb which has been trying to funnel weapons to Algerian Islamists.
