Berlin - Nearly 150 Westerners evacuated from Ivory Coast by the German air force were brought on Saturday to Germany, the defence ministry said.
Western countries have been evacuating thousands of foreigners from Ivory Coast since a government airstrike on French peacekeepers in the rebel-held north touched off unrest in the West African country. France, Ivory Coast's former colonial ruler, has led the evacuation effort.
The German Air Force brought 148 people to safety in nearby Ghana in the last few days, and all were flown on Saturday to a military airport in Cologne, Germany.
On board were 35 Germans along with Europeans, Americans and Canadians.
German officials could not say if any Germans were left in Ivory Coast, but the numbers indicated that most - or all - Germans who wanted to leave were evacuated. The government has said that about 40 Germans wanted to leave the West African country.
