Accra - Ghanaian authorities have impounded a South American ship carrying 400kg of cocaine and arrested its crew, the nation's anti-narcotics agency said on Thursday.

"It has a street value of about US$50m," said the statement by the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) seen by AFP.

The military and anti-narcotics agents had impounded the Guyana-registered MV ATIYAH on Tuesday following a tip-off.

They found the huge haul of cocaine on board the vessel and arrested its five-member crew, which included one Ghanaian, the statement said.

"The vessel had been monitored at the high seas and when she got into the Ghanaian waters the Ghana navy and NACOB officers arrested and escorted her to the Sekondi Naval Base," it said.

Ghana was investigating the case, it added.

Ghana is considered a trans-shipment point for traffickers moving cocaine and marijuana to Europe and the United States.

Last year, police at London's Heathrow airport intercepted a 1.5 ton shipment of marijuana and a 7.5kg shipment of cocaine hidden in the peels of plantains, a staple food of the west African nation.

Ghana is also Africa's second-largest producer of gold and the world's second-largest producer of cocoa.
