'Greatest shoal on earth' late

Durban - The sardine run on the KwaZulu-Natal coast is later than usual this year, the Natal Sharks Board said on Wednesday.

Chief executive Mike Anderson-Reade said the "greatest shoal on earth" would probably make its appearance soon and urged “die-hard” fishermen and “sardine runners” not to be too concerned.

“I don’t think we are going to miss them this year. The sardine run sometimes happens in June or July. Everything looks good so far"

Anderson-Reade said last week sardines were spotted off the Wild Coast but they were far from the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.

For the past 11 years, except for one, sardine runs have taken place in June.

The sardines make their way from the Agulhas Banks in the Cape up the Wild Coast to KwaZulu-Natal each winter.
