Conakry - Security forces in Guinea opened fire on a car carrying former Prime Minister Lansana Kouyate, who was taking part in a demonstration against the ruling party.

Witnesses say that police on Monday first fired tear gas at the home of Cellou Dalein Diallo, the leader of the country's opposition who lost the 2010 election to the current president.

The demonstration was due to begin at Diallo's house.

Diallo, as well as Kouyate and other opposition leaders, piled into Kouyate's car.

Sire Diallo, a resident, said the car was heading toward Kouyate's house in the neighbourhood of Matoto, when police opened fire on the vehicle.

After reaching his house, Kouyate confirmed his car had been hit by the live rounds, calling it an "inadmissible act" in an interview on Planet FM.
