Gunmen attack cop, kill child, 6

2012-04-09 11:24
Maiduguri - A local official says that gunmen suspected to be members of a radical Islamic sect opened fire at a policeman and his family, killing the policeman's 6-year-old daughter.

Yobe State police spokesperson Toyin Gbadegeshin said that the policeman's other son and daughter were injured in the shooting late on Sunday at the policeman's home in Potiskum in northeast Nigeria. The boy and girl are being treated at the hospital.

Gbadegeshin says that the policeman escaped the attack and was found later on Sunday.

A neighbour and witness said they had to rush the kids to the hospital.

Ggadegeshin said the gunmen were suspected members of Boko Haram, a group waging an increasingly bloody fight with security agencies and the public. More than 380 people have been killed in violence blamed on the sect this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.
