Bangui - A hand grenade attack on a Bangui market on Sunday left four people injured, including two women and a Burundian soldier from MISCA, the African force deployed in the Central African Republic.

The grenade was thrown by an unidentified assailant into a crowd at the market in the Kokoro neighbourhood of Bangui, an AFP correspondent reported.

The incident shattered three days of relative calm in the capital, despite rumours of a possible imminent attack by Christian militias in Muslim areas, supported by members of the armed forces loyal to deposed president Francois Bozize.

The people of Bangui are exhausted by the cycle of violence and endless reprisal between the so-called anti-balaka Christian militias and former Seleka rebels, who seized power in coup in March last year.

More than 1 000 people have been killed in the past month and nearly a million people have been displaced since the coup that installed ex-rebel leader Michel Djotodia as the country's first Muslim president.

French troops launched a mission a month ago to try to restore order to their war-torn former colony. Some 1 600 French troops and around 4 000 African peacekeepers are attempting to curb escalating sectarian strife.

Weeks of violence in the country have pitted majority Christians against Muslims, who make up one-fifth of the population.
