Dar Es Salaam - At least 10 people, five of them children, were killed by heavy floods in Tanzania's economic capital, Dar es Salaam, officials said on Saturday.

Hundreds of others were trapped by the floods, while dozens of homes had been destroyed, according to regional police commander Suleiman Kova.

At least five bridges in and around Dar es Salaam had been swept away, said Kova. The city of 1.4 million people came to a standstill Saturday as storm waters flooded its streets.

Meteorologists warned the heavy rains would continue for two more days. "Our men are on high alert," the regional police commander told dpa.
