Lisbon - Heavy rains in Mozambique have killed at least three people and left thousands homeless since Sunday, the Lusa news agency reported on Thursday, citing officials in the southeastern African country.
The deaths occurred in the city of Nampula, the capital of the northern province with the same name, city officials told the agency.
The rough weather damaged about 1 200 homes in Nampula, destroyed more than 100 homes in the capital of southern Gaza province, Xai-Xai, and left hundreds homeless in Beira, Mozambique's second largest city, the agency said.
The torrential rains follow a severe drought which has left about one million people in the former Portuguese colony facing hunger.
