Cape Town - Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has reportedly challenged members of his ruling NRM party who are allegedly trying to overthrow him, saying he is a "war general" who cannot be dislodged with ease.

Museveni has over the years come under increasing criticism for his reluctance to cede power after more than 27 years as president. He has also come under fire over his alleged failure to tackle corruption.

Speaking after he got his National Resistance Movement party's nod to vie for another term in 2016 during its ongoing 10-day party retreat, Museveni berated dissenters within the party, according to Africa Review.

Museveni said he had received intelligence information that some senior officials within his party were “secretly mobilising to wrest control of the party from him”.

Museveni, who did not mention names, said such individuals were mistaken as he was a "war general" who could not be overthrown with ease.

A party statement released early this week said Museveni, 69, remained the party's "driver" and that "anybody else can wait". Without naming them, the statement slammed Museveni's rivals as a danger to "party cohesion".
