New York - The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court is calling on the UN Security Council to consider asking all countries and regional organisations to arrest Sudan's president and three others for alleged war crimes in Darfur.

Luis Moreno-Ocampo told the Security Council on Tuesday that the Sudanese government's refusal to arrest President Omar al-Bashir and the others "is a direct challenge to the council's authority".

The council authorised the court to investigate atrocities in Darfur in 2005. Moreno-Ocampo said it should now evaluate other possibilities to arrest the four Sudanese, including asking the UN member states and regional groups to execute the arrest warrants.

Sudan's UN Ambassador Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman condemned the proposal, accused Moreno-Ocampo of trying to incite the council and said the court has no jurisdiction.
