Inauguration of Niger president delayed
Niamey - The inauguration of Niger's newly elected president, initially planned for April 6, will now take place a day later so as not to conflict with that of Benin's new leader, the presidency said on Monday.
"The inauguration of president-elect Mahamadou Issoufou is postponed to April 7 because the re-elected president of Benin is being inaugurated on April 6," the presidential press service told AFP.
The postponement was confirmed by the committee organising the ceremony in Niamey.
Issoufou, 59, won a March 12 presidential election with 58% of votes to 42% for former prime minister Seini Oumarou, the election commission said.
The inauguration will bring an end to military rule after a coup on February 18 2010, unseated Mamadou Tandja after 10 years in power.
Issoufou has promised to combat poverty and insecurity in the uranium-rich desert country, which is battling the threat of al-Qaeda cells who have kidnapped several Westerners in recent years.
