Ireland cuts aid to Uganda

Dublin - Ireland has cut direct financial aid to the Ugandan government because of concerns over potential corruption, the Irish Times reported on Thursday.
The move was justified with concerns over Uganda's involvement in the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the newspaper said.
Tom Kitt, Ireland's Minister of State for Overseas Co- operation, decided to end funding to the Ugandan government after his visit to the country last month.
The minister said he had taken the decision "in the light of the overall debate on potential corruption".
The $11.2m will now be redirected to regional projects not controlled by central Ugandan government, and to a dedicated fund to tackle poverty in the east African state. - Sapa-DPA
