Rome - Italy's foreign ministry says an Italian engineer who was abducted in Libya in March has been freed.

The ministry said in a statement on Sunday that Gianluca Salviato arrived in Rome on Saturday.

Salviato was working on a sewer construction project for an Italian company when he went missing in the eastern city of Tobruk, Libya.

Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said on Twitter that Salviato's freedom was the result of work by Italy's foreign ministry, intelligence services and embassy in Libya.

Italy has kept its embassy in Tripoli open despite poor security conditions. Islamist-allied militias now hold Tripoli and the country's second-largest city, Benghazi

No details have been given about how Salviato was released.

The same is true of another Italian hostage who was freed in Libya a few days go.
