Pretoria - The Japanese government will pledge aid money to build 17 schools and water supply facilities in Lesotho, the Japanese embassy in Pretoria said on Wednesday.
The approximately $90m aid agreement will be signed by Toshinori Shigeie, Japanese ambassador in South Africa and Lesotho's Foreign Minister Mohlabi Tseko in Maseru on Friday.
The secretary of the Japanese embassy, K Matsui, said in a statement the aid will be used to build schools with 229 classrooms in Berea and Maseru. Water supply facilities will also be introduced in these areas.
"The government of Japan... believes that the new facilities will prove beneficial to the disadvantaged educators and learners of Berea and Maseru and that it will provide an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning", said Matsui.
