Joseph Kony sidekick to be investigated

2012-05-22 19:17

Kampala - A Ugandan official says a top Joseph Kony associate recently captured in the jungle will be "investigated" and may be put on trial if there is sufficient evidence against him.

Director of Public Prosecutions Richard Buteera released that statement on Tuesday. Caesar Acellam was arrested in the Central African Republic on 12 May. He is the highest-ranking former Lord's Resistance Army member to have left the bush.

Uganda's defence minister said last week that Acellam may be eligible for amnesty, though Radhika Coomaraswamy, the top UN official for children and armed conflict, has said Acellam must face charges.

Members of the LRA are guilty of the torture and abuse of thousands of victims in Central Africa.

Uganda has pardoned thousands of former LRA rebels who co-operated with the authorities.
