Nairobi - Two journalists from Tanzanian daily Mwanahalisi were seriously injured after unknown assailants attacked them with machetes and acid, said the Media Institute for Southern Africa on Tuesday.
The two were taken to hospital after the attack on Saturday with serious injuries including cuts and chemical burns, the institute reported, with one having been blinded by the acid.
The Swahili-language newspaper had in the past spotlighted politicians accused of corruption and of misappropriating public funds.
One of the assaulted journalists, Saed Kubanea, had previously said he received numerous death threats.
Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, who had also been accused of corruption by Mwanahalisi, condemned the attack as "despicable". Journalists' unions in the east African country called on the government to investigate the incident.
