Pietermaritzburg - The KwaZulu-Natal health department is trying to prevent a cholera outbreak around Ndwedwe, north of Durban.
On Monday, a team was sent to the area, which was ravaged by flash floods and hailstorms last week.
Mbali Thusi of the department said the team would try to ensure an adequate supply of clean water and monitor basic sanitation.
"Their task is to educate the people in the area about the risk of using dirty water."
The health department had sent 1 000 bottles of bleach to Ndwedwe on Monday.
Thusi said: "Bleach can be used as a disinfectant and kills germs that can cause diseases."
A mobile clinic was also dispatched to the area. After the storm, more than 600 people were treated in various hospitals.
