Kenya deputy chief justice suspended
Nairobi - Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has suspended the deputy chief justice and formed a tribunal to investigate an allegation that she pulled a gun on a female security guard at a shopping centre.
Nancy Baraza "stands suspended from exercising the functions of her office with immediate effect" until the tribunal completes its investigations, said an official statement issued late on Wednesday.
Baraza has admitted that an incident took place with a security guard at the high-end Village Market shopping mall in Nairobi on New Year's Eve after she reportedly refused to be searched.
Security guard Rebecca Kerubo claimed Baraza pinched her nose, and then pointed a gun at her. Baraza has said she regretted the incident but robustly denies pointing a firearm at the guard.
Baraza was appointed last year under a new constitution, part of wide ranging reforms to make Kenyan leaders more accountable, after bloody 2007-2008 post-election violence that left over a thousand people dead.
