Kenya in Somalia hot pursuit

2011-11-13 19:09

Nairobi - Kenya's military spokesperson says Kenyan and Somali government troops have killed nine members of an al-Qaeda-linked militant group they are pursuing in Somalia.

Emmanuel Chirchir said on Sunday that the soldiers came upon an al-Shabaab camp while on patrol on Saturday night. He says four Kenyan soldiers were wounded.

Kenya last month sent hundreds of troops into the failed state of Somalia to pursue the powerful militant group. Kenya blames the group for a string of attacks and kidnappings in Kenya, including those of four Europeans.

The Kenyan government says the kidnappings threaten tourism, a key source of revenue for the country.

In return, al-Shabaab has threatened to attack Kenya's capital with suicide bombings.
