Kenya seizes 600kg of Nigeria-bound ivory

2012-06-23 09:46

Nairobi - Kenyan security dogs at Nairobi airport Friday outsmarted traffickers and sniffed through a layer of pepper to uncover a 600-kilo cargo of ivory bound for Nigeria, a statement said.

"Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Canine Unit together with Police and Customs officials at Kenya's main airport in Nairobi have intercepted 345 pieces of raw ivory weighing 601 kg destined for Lagos, Nigeria," KWS said.

"The ivory, packed in six crates and sprayed with pepper to prevent dogs from sniffing it, had been further covered with aluminium foil," the wildlife service statement said.

It added that an investigation had been launched to determine who the smugglers were.

The illegal trade in ivory is fuelled by demand in Asia and the Middle East where elephant tusks and rhinoceros horns are used to make ornaments and in traditional medicines.

Africa is home to an estimated 472,000 elephants whose survival is threatened by poaching and illegal trade in game trophies, as well as rising population causing habitat loss.

Why am I not surprised by the Nigerian link?

      omonaija - 2012-06-23 13:04

What do you mean you are not surprised with the Nigerian link? Why do you guys always go "gaga" when you here the name Nigeria as if Nigerians are the only ones amongst the human race who commit crimes? Do you have any evidence to prove that the smugglers were in fact Nigerian citizens and not Asians using Nigeria as smuggling transit point to Asia? Try to get rid of your Xenophobic mindset ,it can mislead your sense of judgement. There are Asian businessmen everywhere on the African continent and Nigeria is not an exception. It might as well be a kenyan smuggler who is going to meet his Asian dealer in Nigeria.Every nation commits crime and there are nations in the west and east whose citizens statistically commit more crimes than Nigerians but they are not as hated the same way Nigerians are generally dehumanized and hated. Why is that so if i may ask? Could it be because we are black?

@ Omonaija. How fa now. I don't think its because nigerians are \black\ persay. Its a stigma created in the minds of all south africans (black and white) whenever a nigerian is mentioned in the local media its almost always involves some sort of crime. Mostly 419 scams and drug related crimes.

ominaija, please show me ONE positive story pertaining to Nigerians outside of Nigeria. You can blame the media if you want, but looking at the way your countrymen behave may prove more fruitful. I work with African nations every day and I spend a considerable time in Africa and I am Africa-positive, but I don't think I'm alone in this negative perception.

Piss off! Go kill yourself or something.

      omonaija - 2012-06-23 13:19

tshepo.motaung.391....Bra i understand how you feel but try not to use the word "kill".We Africans are better than that. They can hate and detest us all they like,it won't change who we are.We are good people who have been constantly dehumanized through media propaganda and made to look like demons. We are the real Africans and we are one.Keep doing good in your community and do not let the haters bother you.

The article is about Kenya intercepting ivory yet the photo indicates Uganda customs at Entebe (Uganda) airport ? Confused journalism ? Why am I not surprised by the nigerian link ?

      omonaija - 2012-06-23 13:24

Pray tell when you have ever heard of Nigerians smuggling ivory? Maybe there is something you know that we don't. I will suggest you cleanse your heart of the hatred you have for Nigerians and learn to make un biased comments. If the article has mentioned that the Ivory was destined for Greece or Russia ,would you have made the same comments? Racism and xenophobia are alive in your mind.

The only difference between Nigeria and Somalia at the moment is perhaps the dress code and 419s. Pirates, warlords, smugglers, suicide bombs, general lawlessness and a group of people who want to implement Sharia law. Nigeria can be better, but it is the get-rich-quick mentality that will surely bring it to its knees.

@omonaija - where have you been ? Search the press. The majority of arrests in the smuggling of drugs and of abalone in South Africa recently have had Nigerian links. Recent arrests and convictions of drug mules all had Nigerian organisers. I would be critical of anyone smuggling ivory. read my statement - I did not condemn blacks - making a statement about Nigerians does not make me racist - seems however you have a major chip on your shoulder ! Kenya is doing brilliant conservation work and I admire them for this. Nigerians have brought the bad reputaion upon themselves. Other black nations come to South Africa and work really hard to make a living and build up their own businesses. They are some of the most productive of people. Yet Nigerian drug smugglers, scam artists and poachers have tainted the reputaion of black africans unfairly in the minds of the locals and indeed the world.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-06-24 07:09

Demetri, ""Other black nations come to South Africa and work really hard to make a living and build up their own businesses"" That is so true, and it is also true that Nigerians, the world over, have a shocking name, of being involved in many things that are illegal. But in all fairness, there are also many Nigerians, who have come here and have set up businesses and work damn hard. And they have straight and clean businesses. And when one talks about the drug trade, there are plenty of White faces, to be found. In many countries of the world, INCLUDING SA, the drug barons are the Russians and ones from Eastern Europe. And lets not forget Glen Agliotti, the convicted drug boss, who paid Jacky Selebi a bribe. And if there is ever going to be a trial re the killing of Lolly Jackson, no doubt big time drug dealing will come out during this trial, and there won't be a Black involved !!!!
