Kenya - Civil rights activists are accusing Kenya's new government of using the police to crush dissent, following the Criminal Investigation Department's interrogation of a political aide to Kenya's foremost opposition leader over an alleged plan to foster an insurrection.

Rights lawyer Harun Ndubi, who is representing Eliud Owalo, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's campaign manager in the March presidential election, says CID officers interviewed Owalo on Monday for allegations, among others, that he is plotting to initiate "an Egyptian-style uprising".

Ndubi said on Tuesday that the allegations are baseless and it is worrying how the police are allowing themselves to be used by the state.

Police spokesperson Masoud Mwinyi said the police are non-partisan and are looking after the best interests of the country.
