8:04 - Heavy gunfire has been heard from inside the Westgate Mall where an assault against al-Shabaab gunmen was taking place.

Gunmen believed to be Somalia’s al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab insurgents attacked a Kenyan shopping mall in Nairobi on Saturday. The attack is said to have resulted in the death of 68 people. At least 49 people are said to be unaccounted for, while 175 people were injured.

The Kenya government says it is in control of the situation with the country’s military forces said to have launched a major operation. According to AP reports, “most” of the hostages have been rescued.

The US has condemned the attacks, calling the attackers “reckless terrorists” while the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenya who lost a nephew and the nephew's fiancée, said his government was determined to continue fighting al-Shabaab.
