Lesotho prime minister resigns

2012-05-30 15:43

Maseru - Lesotho Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili resigned on Wednesday after his party failed to secure an outright majority in parliamentary elections, the former government secretary said.

"The prime minister has just resigned," former government secretary Tlohang Sekhamane told journalists after he himself also relinquished his post.

Mosisili would announce his decision in a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Sekhamane added.

Mosisili's resignation follows a disappointing show in polls on Saturday, where his Democratic Congress (DC) won only 48 seats in the 120-seat parliament, of which 41 are directly elected and seven awarded by a proportional representation system.

Opposition parties late on Tuesday formed a coalition to form a new government excluding his party in the mountainous constitutional monarchy surrounded by South Africa.

The leader of the main opposition All Basotho Convention (ABC) party, Tom Thabane, said that at least five parties would form an alliance giving them a majority of 64 seats in parliament.

news24 has got it all wrong. The prime minister did not resign because he has lost elections, he has resigned because the results of the past elections have been publicised and he has to resign ang to hand over to a new prime minister. Secondly the opposition parties have not formed government, they have signed a memorandum of understanding to do the same. government cannot be formed without a parliament. Currently ther is no parliament, once there is one then we could talk of a possible government. The former ruling party of mosisili has two weeks to seek avenues of gaining support to have a 61seat majority. Remember that floor crossing is allowed at dis point and some mps may be tempted to cross the floor and join the Dc. ALL IN ALL HE RESIGN AS OF PRINCIPLE AND PROCEDURE HE HAS BEEN GIVEN TIME TO FORM GOVERNMENT
