Monrovia - Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has appointed a new head of the west African nation's judiciary, her office said on Tuesday.

Francis Korkpor, who has been serving in the Supreme Court for more than a decade, will replace Johnnie Lewis, who was granted early retirement last year due to health problems, a statement from the president's office said.

Korpkor, who has been acting chief justice since September, was appointed "due to the vast experience he has achieved while serving on the Supreme Court bench".

Liberia has made some progress in recovering from a devastating civil war which ended a decade ago, but remains one of the world's most underdeveloped nations.

Sirleaf, who made history in 2005 when she became Africa's first elected female president, is credited with development and ushering in massive investments in iron ore, palm oil and oil exploration.

But she faces much criticism for alleged nepotism and corruption and her country has an unemployment rate of about 80%.
