Monrovia - Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has replaced her health minister as part of a broader Cabinet reshuffle amid widespread criticism of her government's response to the country's Ebola outbreak.

In a statement read on state radio on Sunday evening, Sirleaf said Health Minister Walter Gwenigale would be replaced by George Warner, formerly head of the civil service.

The World Health Organisation says Liberia has recorded more than 2 800 confirmed, probable and suspected deaths as a result of the Ebola outbreak, more than any other country.

Critics accuse the government of conducting a heavy-handed but ineffective response, though fewer cases have been recorded lately and a state of emergency was lifted last week.

Despite the criticism, Sirleaf said on Sunday that Gwenigale had her "full confidence" and would continue work as an adviser.
