Addis Ababa - Libya has dropped its bid to host a proposed pan-African parliament, leaving Egypt and South Africa as the only contenders, the African Union (AU) said on Monday.
Tripoli's decision not to seek to host the pan-African parliament was communicated to the AU during a meeting of permanent representatives to the African Union on Friday and Saturday, according to an AU press release.
The AU is expected to decide where the pan-African parliament will be based at the grouping's annual summit in July.
Thirty-six of AU's 53 member states have already signed the protocol establishing the African parliament, whose first session is to be inaugurated in Addis Ababa on Thursday.
