Tripoli - Libya on Thursday announced an amnesty for more than 3 000 prisoners, including Europeans and Africans, to mark the 39th anniversary of Muammar Gaddafi's rule.
The justice ministry said the decision affects a total of 2 071 Libyans and 1 062 "Arabs, Africans and Europeans" who have completed half their jail sentences or have shown good behaviour during their detention.
On Monday September 1, Libya will celebrate the 39th anniversary of the overthrow of Western-backed King Idris in a bloodless coup led by Gaddafi.
Last year, 2 091 prisoners were granted early release from jail to mark the anniversary.
